Choquequirao
Ask About Departure Days
Choquequiraw, which traslates to "Cradle of Gold", is the other Machu Picchu, or even, dare I say it, even more significant than even than the 7th Wonder itself. It is a recently discovered site that is thought to be the last Inca refuge which resisted the Spanish conquerors for decades. To date, only 30% of the complex has been cleared for visits by Peruvians and foreigners alike, due to the fact that the site has yet to undergo a rigorous scientific investigation.
Day 1:
We will begin the tour with an early morning, 4.00 am departure from Cusco, by means of private bus. We will then arrive to our embarking point, Cachora, at around 6.30 am, when we will have our first breakfast of the trek. We will then arrange our equipment on to the horses and mules in order to begin the journey. The first days hike will be about 21.7 kilometers long, or about 10 hours long, and on the way we will be able to see the Padrayoc and Wayna Cachora snow-capped mountains.
Eventually, we will also come to the beautiful, Capulichayoc lookout, from where we will be able to take some amazing pictures with the snow peaks all around us and the mighty Apurimac river flowing in the immense valley beneath us. We will enjoy our lunch here at the lookout, before continuing on towards our days final destination, Santa Rosa.
Day 2:
Again, we will get a very early start to our day again to begin our trek early. After another scenic 5 hours of walking we will finally arrive to the immense Choquequiraw ruins. We will observe the three levels of the excavated ruins, where we can appreciate ancient houses, terraces, aqueducts and other parts of this stunning Inca-town. We will even get a chance to see the, as yet, still uncovered areas and finally, still unexplored areas that can show us more about this, the last refuge of the oppressed inca empire. At approximately 3.00 pm in the afternoon (depends on the weather), we will go to a lookout to appreciate "the flight of the Condors". We will have our lunch and then our dinner in the nearby Raqaypata.
Day 3:
After an early morning breakfast, we will begin the return journey in the direction of Chiquisqa. Along the way, we will again have some spectacular views of the the breathtaking Apurimac Canyon, which is the 3rd deepest canyon in the entire world, and its majestic river that flows through it. We will see some of the most beautiful flowers and orchids during our walk through the lush terrains of the Andes Mountians. It will be about 10 hours of walking throughout the day, along the way, stopping to eat lunch in Playa Rosalina. Upon our arrival to Chiquisqa, we will set up our campsite and prepare ourselves for dinner time.
Day 4:
We will continue our journey with another 5 am breakfast before continuing along the path to arrive to the town Cachora. Along the way we will have some more great views of the Mount Padrayoc. We will arrive to Cachora after about 7 more hours of hiking. On the way back to Cusco we have the option of stopping off in Cconoc, where we can take a dip in the natural hot springs. We will arrive to Cusco around 10.00 pm.
