Colca Canyon
2 Days / 1 Night
Daily Departures at 8:30 AM
This tour is fast becoming one of the most popular in all of Peru. The Colca Canyon, whose name is a reference to the small holes in the cliffs in the valley where food was stored and tombs were place in Inca and Pre Inca times, is more than twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in the United States. We will see amazing views of the Canyon, Pre-Incan terraces, and even the majestic Andean Condor, which is native to this area. It is truly a sight that is not to be missed.
Day 1:
This journey starts off in the White City, Arequipa at 8 AM when we will begin our bus trip to Pampas Cañahuas (3,500 meters), which is a National Reserve where we will have the opportunity to see and take pictures of Vicuñas and Alpacas, with an explanation from our guide about the still un-domesticated Vicuñas. We will continue up the dirt path to the highest point of the trip, the Lookout Point of the Andes (4800 meters), where we will take a moment to take some pictures and appreciate the grandness of the canyon and its surrounding volcanoes (one of which is still active to this day).
Then, we will descend into the canyon and to the main village of the Colca Canyon, Chivay (3600 meters). Here we will have our lunch while learning about the modus vivendi of the localers from our guide. We may even be joined by some local musicians, who will play for us some music typical of the region while we eat. We will then move on to the lodge where we will stay the night. But just to drop off our things, because then we will move on to the final, and maybe the best, event of the day, the Colca Valley Hot Springs. This is an event that will not be soon forgotten. We'll have a chance to swim and just soak in the heat of the thermal baths and the splendor of the illustrious mountains all around us. This is truly a memorable part of our tour. Then we will transfer back to the lodge for dinner and sleep.
Day 2:
We will have an early, 5 AM wakeup, to then eat breakfast and get an early start to our day in order to go and see the majestic Andean Condor. The condors hunt in the early morning and late afternoon, so it is easiest to be seen during those times. We will continue on route to the Cruz de Condor, which is a natural lookout point, and the best place to get a close up view of the condors. On the road we will have the best view of the Colca Valley, as we drive along the edge of the Canyon, seeing on route ancient terraces still in use by the local farmers, who grow mainly varieties of corn and potato. We will make some stops for photos, and our local guide will give us a good insight into the Colca Canyon history. This is also a good place also to see the Colca River and hanging pre-Inca tombs.
After about 2 hours, we will reach Cruz del Condor, where we will spend an hour or so, observing the beautiful flight of the Condors, the depth of the Canyon, the majesty of the surrounding mountains, and the lushness of the terrains. After this, we will return to Chivay, passing through a number of rural communities along the way. We will make a stop to have one last lunch before boarding the bus that will take us back to Arequipa, where we will arrive around 5 PM.

Because the valley is very deep, the rising winds are strong so the local condors take advantage of these winds and soar gracefully through the sky. Where the winds are even stronger, is the "Cruz del Condor" lookout point. It is the most popular viewing point from which to see the Colca Valley and it is also a good place to see the giant condors soaring, with their incredible.
