Lake Titicaca
2 Days / 1 Night
Daily Departures at 7.30 PM
This package allows you to experience the splendor of Lake Titicaca which is the highest navigable lake in the world, at 3856 meters above sea level. You will also have the chance to visit the floating islands of Uros, which is nothing short of amazing. Centuries ago, the small Uros tribe conceived the idea of these islands as a means of protecting themselves from local rivaling tribes.
Day 1: Uros Floating Islands – Amantani Island
We will begin this tour by first being transferred to the harbor from your hotels. The first portion of this journey is an amazing experience. We will visit the floating islands of Uros, which is actually a small, native community that has lived on reed islands in the middle of this immense lake for decades. After visiting them, and hearing explanations and local legends from our guide, we will continue on Amantani Island, by means of boat. Once there, a group of native families will greet us at the harbor.
The guide will introduce us to our "host" families, who will then begin explaining to us their way of life living on the highest lake in navigable lake in the world. We will follow them back to their homes, where we will be staying for the night, one couple per family.
That afternoon we will have an opportunity to trek up to some ruins at the highest point of the island. From here we will have some breath taking views of the immense lake before us, and we will even share the experience of watching one of the most stunning sunsets that you are likely to see in your life. Afterwards we will go down to the main plaza, where our families will be awaiting us.
We will then go back to their homes with them where we will have a typical dinner, cooked with a primitive stove that is made of clay. After dinner we will have a chance to join the localers in their festivities which are held every single night. There will be music and dancing, and they will even give us some of their local garb to dress up in (so that we can "fit in"). This will be a fantastic opportunity to take some more pictures before going off to sleep in the host families'home.
Day 2: Taquile Island - Puno
After a quick breakfast, we will have to bid farewell to our host families and go down to the harbor to meet the rest of the group so that we can begin our journey towards our next destination, Taquile Island (about 1 hour sailing time). Taquile Island is a Quechua speaking community, full of ancient agricultural terraces and even some ruins that date back to Pre-Incan times. The weaving tradition of the Taquile Island goes back to early civilizations, thus keeping elements from pre-Inca Andean cultures alive and well in the present.
All weaving is done on Pre-Inca fixed and pedal looms. When we arrive to the island, we will have to walk along a narrow path, where we will have some great views of the lake and also some quaint little houses inhabited by direct descendants of the Inca culture. We will have some free time on the island so that we can explore a little bit on our own, before joining together to share one last typical meal at one of the local restaurants. After lunch, we will descend to the harbor to catch our boat back to Puno. We will arrive around 5 PM.
