Manu Mystical Journey

MANU6 Days /5 Nights

The Manu Biosphere Reserve, situated in the remote southwestern region of the Amazon basin, is the largest and definitely the only untouched reserve in the neotropics. This unique reserve covers an area of one million eight hundred thousand hectares of undisturbed and pristine forest with the greatest bio-diversity on the earth. For that reason it was declared a world heritage site in 1987 by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.

Day 1:

We will begin the journey with an early morning departure, by means of private bus, in the direction of Paucartambo, which will be our first stop of the day. The trip will be a scenic 4 hour ride, weaving through the majestic Andes Mountains, with stops along the way to take pictures at some choice spots.  Once in Paucartambo, which is known as the folkloric capital of the district of Cusco, we will have our first lunch of the journey.  After lunch, we will continue on our route in the direction of Acjanaco, where we will be able to see some spectacular views of the jungle from an elevated 3,500 meters.  We will continue into the jungle, seeing many different varieties of plants, giant ferns, birds, and orchids along the way.  We will make one more stop at an observation point to see the "Cock of the Rocks", which is the beautiful Peruvian national bird, on the way to our final destination, Pillcopata, where we will spend the first night.

Day 2:

COLLPA DE GUACAMAYOSAfter an early morning breakfast, we will continue by means of private van, in the direction of Shintuya, where we will load up on to a river boat and continue the rest of the way on the majestic Madre de Dios River.  It will be a delightful 4 hour boat ride, listening to the sounds of the jungle, and watching herons and macaws flying about all around us, until we reach the Tradional Medecine Center.  Here, we will have our lunch and enjoy some hikes around the local trail system while our guide explains to us about the plants that we will see and their medicinal uses.  We will set up camp here and sleep for the night.

Day 3:

We will begin this day with a boat ride down the Manu River, towards the Matsiguenka House, which is located inside of the Manu National Park close to Lake Salvador.  During the boat ride we will see Caimans, Herons, and Turtles, amongst other animals.  In the afternoon we will go to Lake Salvador to explore around the surrounding area.  There is a lookout tower from where we will be able to have some great panoramic views of the entire area.  We will then load up onto a boat to explore around the lake itself in search of the endangered Giant River Otter.

Day 4:

After our early morning breakfast we will head out towards the Cocha Otorongo to spend a few hours exploring the local trail around the area while soaking in the flora and fauna of this tropical area.  We will return to the lodge only to have our lunch and then it will be back out to the trails, but this time in the closer trails by the Matsiguenka House.  We will spend all afternoon exploring the area with our guide before returning to house to have our dinner and "hit the sack".

Day 5:

After our breakfast we will either go to the Traditional Medecine Center or to Diamantes Airport to take a flight or continue the journey in the direction of Cusco.

Day 6:

For those of us travelling back to Cusco, we will do so after an early morning breakfast.  It will be about an 8 hour ride back to Cusco, with stops along the way for bathroom breaks and photo opportunities.
