Manu Indiginous Life Tour
7 Days / 6 Nights
We have created this tour to provide you with a chance to really experience the lifestyle of the indiginous peoples of the rainforest. In this journey, we will have the chance to visit not one, but two different native cultures of the Amarakaeri Reserve. We will learn about their culture, their customs, and their use of medicinal plants.
Day 1:
We will begin the journey with an early morning departure, by means of private bus, in the direction of Paucartambo, which will be our first stop of the day. The trip will be a scenic 4 hour ride, weaving through the majestic Andes Mountains, with stops along the way to take pictures at some choice spots. Once in Paucartambo, which is known as the folkloric capital of the district of Cusco, we will have our first lunch of the journey. After lunch, we will continue on our route in the direction of Acjanaco, where we will be able to see some spectacular views of the jungle from an elevated 3,500 meters. We will continue into the jungle, seeing many different varieties of plants, giant ferns, birds, and orchids as well as passing various high jungle communities along the way. We will make one stop in the native community of Shintuya to visit and take pictures before continuing on to Tambo Weuk, where we will eat dinner and stay for the night.
Day 2:
Before breakfast we will take a dip in some local, natural hot springs of the region to start off our day in a relaxing manner. Then, after breakfast, we will continue by boat down the Alto Madre de Dios, leaving what is left of the Andes behind us, and venturing deep into the jungle territory. We will have the chance to visit the local Matsiquenka de Shipetiari community by mid morning. We will eat our lunch here, interact with the localers, and explore the local area, by means of the local trail system, while our guide explains to us about the local modus vivendi and their customs. Then we will return to the community to eat dinner and get to sleep.
Day 3:
After our breakfast, we will head of in the direction of the Traditional Medecine Center, where we will settle into our Matsiguenka style cabins. After we have settled in, a local shaman, who are regarded as spiritual guides and healers, will show us the medicinal plants of the region, which have helped the Amazon cultures survive in the jungle for thousands of years, and how they are traditionally used. After having our lunch we will go on an extensive trek in search of birds and other tropical wildlife. We will then return to have dinner at the cabins. For those who wish to partake, there will also be a guided night time walk around the
area.
Day 4:
After having our breakfast in the Traditional Medecine Center, we will leave the area heading towards Boca Manu, where we will settle into our lodge and relax for a bit. After having our lunch here, we will go into the surrounding jungle area in search of the endangered Giant River Otter and other types of local wildlife such as the local bird, known as the Hoatzin. Then it will be back to the lodge for dinner and sleep.
Day 5:
After a very early morning breakfast, we will be off on an early start to see a colorful event: the "ccolpa" of the Macaws, which is an event where dozens, or perhaps even hundreds of these colorful birds gather to "balance their diets" by licking the nutrient rich earth in this particular spot. This event is best observed between the months of May and July and less so between the months of August and September. Afterwards, we will continue travelling towards Boca Isiriwe, where we will have our lunch for the day. After lunch we will again, trek through this thick forest to arrive at another "ccolpa", and we may even see some Huanganas or Tapirs along the way. We will eat dinner and set up our camp for the night on the beautiful shores of the Ishiriwe River.
Day 6:
After eating our breakfast we wil continue on to the pueblo, Colorado. From here, we will take a large out board moter boat to the port city of Laberinto, where we will have our lunch. From there we will board a bus or a taxi, depending on the size of the group, to Puerto Maldonado, the capital jungle city of the south, where we will stay in the hotel or hostel of your choice.
Day 7:
After our breakfast, we will be transfered to the airport where some of us will fly to Cusco and some us will fly to Lima.
