Puerto Maldonado

VICTORIAS REGIA4 Days / 3 Nights

“Puerto Maldonado is the capital of the district of Madre de Dios, but is also commonly refered to as the capital of the jungle for the south side of the country. This “jungle city” is nestled into the middle of some of the thickest jungles in the world. Now is your oppertunity to experience diversity and wildlife of the Peruvian Rainforest”

Day 1: Cusco – Puerto Maldonado – Jungle Lodge

Upon your arrival to Puerto Maldonado, we will have a guide take you on a quick tour of the center of town and their exotic local markerplace. Depending on your arrival time, we may eat a quick lunch here or we may eat it on the way to the lodge. To get to the lodge we will board a boat, that will then take us downstream to our jungle lodge. Once there we will have a short break to settle in, while drinking a “welcome drink”, before continuing on the next event of the day: Monkey Island.

In the afternoon, we will take a scenic, 30 min boat journey to arrive to the famous Monkey Island, where you will be able to appreciate a great diversity of monkeys such as the “Maquisapa”, “Martin”, “Little Lions”, “Frailes”, “Achuñis”, Ronsocos” etc, as well as a rich variety of birds and plants.

After a good while of picture taking and “getting to know” the monkeys, we will continue back to the lodge. We will then enjoy a typical jungle dinner in the lodges´dining room. Afterwards, we have the option to have a group discussion on a variety of different topics or a night time walk. Cayman spotting is available only when conditions are optimal.

Day 2: Jungle Lodge – Lake Sandoval – Monkey Island

After having our breakfast, we will take an informative and interesting trek through the thick jungle, with it´s flora and fauna abound on all sides. We will see Water Birds, Alligators, Wild Hens, Taricayas, and when we arrive to the Lake itself, the always fun-to-watch, Giant Otters, of which there are only a very meak 1000 left in the world, of which, 9 inhabit this lake. At the lake, we will be able to use a canoe to fish for piranhas, row around the lake, swim, explore the territory or just simply relax and “soak in” the experience.

We will also have our box lunch out by this, the most beautiful lake in all of Madre de Dios. After lunch we will have a guided trek with out guide through the surrounding areas. We will have a chance to take pictures underneath the immense and amazing Lupuna trees. We will then visit some traditional “chacras”, or plantations in the local areas of the zone. We will then return to the lodge to have our dinner, and experience and another night time activity.

Day 3:

PUERTO MALDONADOWe will again begin with our breakfast at the lodge before it is out into the wild again. We will start off the day with and morning time trek through the lush forest on one of the many routes in the local trail system. We will come to an area where we will board a boat to travel a further 1 hour or so downriver to the Taricaya Project, which is a jungle “rehab” for animals that have been taken from there natural habitat for modernization purposes.

As we walk through the immense Taricaya Project, our guide will regale us about the local legends of the area, he will teach us about medicinal plants and their curative properties, of which there are thousands. Our guide will teach us to recognize bird calls and animal footprints as we walk through the extensive trails.

We will then have our lunch, there in the “project”, before moving on the the “canopy walk”. This is a very popular portion of the tour as you will have the chance to walk high up in the canopy of the jungle in a system of bridges and tree houses that will supply you with an amazing view of the jungle beneath you. Then it is back to the lodge to share in one last “jungle sunset” before our farewell dinner. Optional night time activity.

Day 4: Jungle Lodge – Collpa de Loros – Puerto Maldonado – Cusco/ Lima

It will be an especially early wake up on this day in order to enjoy our last morning in the jungle.  It will begin with an illustrious sunrise from on the river as we float downstream for an hour and a half to our first destination, the amazing Collpa de Loros.

At the Collpa de Loros,  we will have a chance to witness this stunning display of hundreds of green parrots that congregate here every morning at first light each morning.  We will spend about an hour here before reboarding our boat.  We will have our breakfast on the boat ride in the direction of Puerto Maldonado, and our departing flights.  Check in 2 hours before the flight.
