Arequipa City Tour

MAIN SQUARE - AREQUIPADaily Departures at 9.00 AM and 2.30 PM

This, the second largest city in all of Peru, is known as the White City. And rightly so, because of much of the city center is built of sillar, a white volcanic stone. This is fitting because Arequipa is also home to various volcanoes, of which, one of them is even still active.

Itinerary:

Our tour will begin with the collection of all of the customers from their hotels. When everybody is gathered we can begin our tour. The first stop of the day is at the remarkable Santa Catalina Monastery. A must-see in the White City of Arequipa, Santa Catalina Monastery was begun in 1579/1580, forty years after the city was founded. The monastery was enlarged over the centuries until it became a city within the city, about 20000 sq./m. and covering a good sized city block. The highlights of the trip are:

  • Cloister of the Oranges : The three crosses set among the orange trees are the center of the Passion of the Christ ceremonies when the monastery is closed to visitors.
  • Entrance Portico An exquisite statue of St Catherine of Siena over an arched doorway
  • Cordova Street: A beautiful street reminiscent of Spain with hanging geraniums on one side.
  • Plaza Zocodover: Zocodover is the Arab word for exchange. This was the area where the nuns gathered on Sundays to barter their religious crafts
  • Sevilla Street - Originally led to first church of St Catherine which was later converted to the kitchens. The kitchen burned coal and wood, which darkened the walls and ceilings. The original cooking utensils are even still on display.

MISTI VOLVANOAfter leaving the Monastery, we will continue on to the next item of the tour, a walk around the Cathedral of Arequipa, where we will receive explanations from our guide about the amazing colonial art that we will find there. We will also learn about the construction of the building and its spectacular architecture.

Next up, we will visit one of the largest Alpaca Workshops of the city. Here we will have a chance to see, take pictures of, and learn about Alpacas, Llamas, Vicuñas and Guanacos (lesser known, but no less gorgeous).

The last portion of the tour will involve a brief drive over to the district of Yanahuara, where we will visit the famous Yanahuara Mirador. This is a fantastic lookout point from where we will receive spectacular views of the White City with its immense volcanoes surrounding it.
